今天讲解一个常用动词manipulate，以及它的名词形式manipulation和形容词形式manipulative，需要注意的一点是，它们的形式和词性的变化，只是改变了它们所能在句中中担任的句子成分，以及它们作为修饰对象或者修饰性成分的角色，不管它们的形式和词性如何变化，它们的核心语义是没有变化的，依然是“操纵、操作”这一核心语义。

一、动词manipulate

1. 单词拼读：ma ni pu late /m? ?n? pju le?t/，这个单词的拼写可以分为四个音节，第一个音节是ma，其中的元音a的发音是最常见的不规则发音 /?/；第二个音节是ni，其中的元音i的发音是短音/i/；第三个音节是pu，其中的元音u的发音是/ju/；第四个音节是late，其中有两个元音，按照规则，第二个元音e不发音，第一个元音a发它的本音，也就是字母音/e?/，这就是为什么很多单词都是以不发音的元音e结尾的原因，为了让前面一个元音发它们的字母音。整体来讲，这个单词的拼读非常符合发音规律，基本记住发音，就能记住拼写。

2. 语义：manipulate有两个语义方向，一个是操纵、摆布，这主要是一个贬义词，有时候也是一个中性词；另一个是操作、使用，这是一个中性词。

3. 动词类别：manipulate只有一种表达方式，单宾语及物动词的表达方式，也就是说，它构成的句型只有一种：主语+动词+宾语。

4. 例句：

（1）Venice manipulated markets by controlling salt production. 威尼斯通过控制食盐生产操纵市场。

在这句话中，动词manipulate的名词化表达方式是：Venice’s manipulation of markets was achieved by controlling salt production.

（2）Aiding its ability to ruthlessly manipulate commerce and control territory, Venice maintained the ships of the merchant fleet as a naval reserve and called them into combat when needed. 凭借其无情地操纵商业和控制领土的能力，威尼斯维持着商船队的船只作为海军后备队，并在需要时将其召入战斗。

在这句话中，动词manipulate的名词化表达方式是：Aiding its ability of ruthless manipulation of commerce and control of territory.

（3）Their tendency to manipulate plants and animals accounts for the emergence of farming. 他们操纵动植物的倾向是农业出现的原因。

在这句话中，动词manipulate的名词化表达方式是：Their tendency of manipulation of plants and animals.

（4）These cultures developed advanced technologies that allowed them to manipulatetheir environment and thrive in its arid conditions, though ultimately environmental factors may also have led to their disappearance. 这些文化发展了先进的技术，使它们能够改变环境，在干旱条件下茁壮成长，尽管最终环境因素也可能导致了它们的消亡。

在这个句子中，划横线的两部分都是信息添加成分，也就是修饰性成分，第一个绿色的部分是一个形容词性从句，也就是定语从句，其功能是给前面的名词technologies添加信息，用来说明是什么样的technologies。第二个红色的部分是一个副词性从句，也就是状语从句，这是一个though引导的让步状语从句，其功能是给前面整个句子添加信息，添加的是让步信息，尽管…，当信息添加对象是整个句子的时候，需要使用逗号和前面整个句子隔开，这就是句子中逗号存在的原因。

（5）Between A.D. 300 and 900, the Hohokam manipulated the arid environment by building large canals, some as wide as 30 feet across, 7 feet deep, and 8 miles long, that could fertilize as many as 8,000 acres at a time with water from the Salt and Gila river systems. 公元300年至900年之间，霍霍坎人通过修建大运河来控制干旱环境，其中一些大运河宽达30英尺，深7英尺，长8英里，这些大运河可以用盐河和吉拉河系统的水一次性灌溉8000英亩土地。

（6）A second group of southwestern peoples, the Anasazi, also developed advanced technologies for manipulating their environment. 另一群西南人群是阿纳萨齐人，他们也开发了先进的技术来控制他们的环境。

二、名词manipulation

名词manipulation的语义，和动词manipulate的语义没有任何区别。比如下面两个例句中的manipulation，其中的划横线部分都是名词词组结构，注意观察这些名词词组的构成形式是什么结构。

（1）Our current ability to precisely engineer crop genomes was preceded by a long history of genetic manipulation in agriculture.在我们目前精确设计作物基因组的能力之前，有着悠久的农业基因操作历史。

第一个名词词组是名词+to do不定式构成的，第二个名词词组是名词+of介词词组构成的。

（2）What audiences came to see was the technological marvel of the movies; the lifelike reproduction of the commonplace motion of trains, of waves striking the shore, and of people walking in the street; and the magic made possible by trick photography and the manipulation of the camera. 观众前来观看的是电影的技术奇迹；火车、海浪拍岸和人们在街上行走的平凡动作的栩栩如生的再现；而这种魔术则是通过特技摄影和相机的操控而实现的。

三、形容词manipulative

形容词manipulative的意思是：操纵性的，善于摆布（他人）的。例如：

（1）The deals of London metal exchange are highly manipulative. 伦敦金属交易所的交易具有高度的操纵性。

（2）The highly manipulative deals of London metal exchange have been the open secret of the industry. And their manipulative actions seem immune from government supervision. 伦敦金属交易所的高度操纵性交易一直是该行业公开的秘密。他们的操纵行为似乎不受政府监管。
